Il panorama dei contest internazionali sulla fotografia di matrimonio è una vera giungla. Ci sono quelli ‘parrocchiali’, quelli dignitosi, quelli in cui vincono tutti, quelli importanti e poi c’è il numero uno, il WPPI (che non tratta solo di matrimonio, ma ne è indiscutibilmente la sua parte più nota). Tale prestigio deriva dal numero di partecipanti, dalla serietà delle votazioni, dalla qualità dei giudici e dalla storia decennale del concorso, non è un caso che molti lo considerano gli Oscar della Fotografia di Matrimonio.

A Las Vegas si confrontano fotografi da tutto il mondo con una selezione attenta e curata. Vincere con un intero lavoro non impaginato, e non con qualche scatto singolo – che comunque ha la sua importanza, ci mancherebbe – assume un valore ancora più interessante. Prendere il primo premio nella sezione ‘Album foto singole’ vuol dire avere presentato qualcosa di veramente speciale che, nel mio caso, è il frutto di una ricerca espressiva che sto portando avanti da un po’ di tempo. Sono veramente felice di aver raggiunto anche questo traguardo, proprio con un nuovo progetto, con una visione personale della fotografia di matrimonio. Non tanto nello scatto – il reportage resta il filo conduttore della mia visione del matrimonio – quanto nel modo di comunicare. La sovrapposizione di lastre fotografiche logorate dal tempo – alcune prese tra le vecchie cose di mio padre – con lo scatto digitale, ha voluto fondere le origini della fotografia con il presente digitale. Un qualcosa che sento molto mio, che racconta anche parte della mia storia. Questo è l’esempio di quanto sia importante cercare nella fotografia un proprio stile, di andare avanti senza seguire le mode del momento che, troppo spesso, portano ad una fotografia standardizzata e priva di personalità. Forse per un po’ ti sembra di essere fuori dal giro, o meglio, ti fanno sentire old fashion, ma quando hai carattere, passione, amore e questo viene messo nei tuoi lavori alla fine hai in mano la carta vincente.

I miei più sinceri complimenti vanno anche a JoAnne Barbara Dunn e a David Bastianoni che nella ‘mia’ categoria sono arrivati rispettivamente secondi e terzi. Un complimento particolare a David perché ha trionfato anche in altre categorie. Purtroppo non so chi ‘altri italiani’ hanno vinto non essendo stato presente durante la premiazione, mi scuso quindi se non li ho potuti nominare.

The panorama of international wedding photography contests is a real jungle. There are those local, those dignified, those in which everyone wins, those important and then there is the number one contest – the WPPI (that not only covers wedding photography but is the one most well known). The prestige of this contest is derived from the number of participants, the seriousness of the voting, the quality of the judges and the 10 year history of the competition. It is no coincidence that many consider this contest the “Oscars” of wedding photography.

In Las Vegas photographers from all over the world are carefully and meticulously compared. Being able to win with a complete work and not with a single photo – which in of itself has importance – has compelling value. To take the first prize in the “Individual Photo Album” means  to have presented something really special that in my case is the result of expressive research that I have been working on for some time now. I’m really happy to have reached this milestone interestingly enough with a new personal vision of wedding photography. Not so much with my way of shooting – my wedding reportage remains in theme with my vision of wedding photography – but how I communicate. The superimposition of worn out photographic film (some taken from fathers old things) with the release of digital photography was a way for me to merge the origins of film photography with digital. I believe this tells part of my story.  It is an example of how important  it is for a photographer to find their own style and to go ahead without following the fad of the moment which too often brings standard photography with no personality. Maybe for a while you may feel like an outsider or worse “old fashioned” but when you have character, passion, and love in your work it will leave you with a winning card.

My sincere congratulations also go to JoAnne Barbara Dunn and David Bastianoni that in ‘my’ category came second and third respectively. A special congratulations to David because he also triumphed in other categories. Unfortunately I not know  ‘other Italians’ who have won since I was not present during the award ceremony, so I apologize if I have not mentioned you.
